The maintenance of the toilet is the responsibility of the tenant. When the rental period begins, the toilet is delivered neat and must also be returned in this condition.

What can you do as a tenant to ensure that the toilet is delivered in good condition? Below is a list of things that should be done when necessary:

  • The toilet seat and lid: replace in case of breakage or loose connections, easy to attach with two bolts/wing nuts.
  • The sleeve or sock: is the rubber connection piece between the cistern and the bowl. It can happen that this gets damaged or deformed, when this happens a leak can occur. A new rubber costs a few euros and can easily be slid around the pipe.
  • The toilet keeps running: by removing the lid of the cistern you can look inside the cistern. The plunger that covers the cistern hole is equipped with a rubber ring. Dismantle the plunger, clean the ring or replace it if necessary.

Small fountain
Often, a small tap, also called a fountain, is also installed at the toilet. This is to wash your hands immediately after using the toilet. It is possible that this fountain breaks or becomes clogged over time. This can be caused by, for example, clacking or general age. If the fountain is broken and a new one is needed, you must contact the landlord. You can first solve a blockage in the drain yourself.
