Below are the most common causes of smelly odors in your home:

Leakage
One of the most common causes of a bad smell is a leak in the drain, for example. Check all places where water pipes run, because there is a chance of leaks and therefore odor nuisance. These places include: the toilet, dishwasher, washing machine, meter cupboard, crawl space and the central heating boiler.

Poor ventilation
Does the smell mainly come up when it has rained heavily outside? Then check the ventilation of your sewer. A sewer smell can be the result of problems with the ventilation of your sewer.

Blockage
Is the water not draining properly in your dishwasher? Do you hear the drains bubbling and does your toilet flush poorly? Has it been a long time since you cleaned your siphon? Then there is probably a blocked pipe. The best remedy is soda. Do you still smell the foul odor afterwards? Then it may be that it is not the pipe, but the sewer itself that is blocked. In that case, ask your neighbors if they are also bothered by a sewer smell. Is the answer yes? Then contact the municipality. If the neighbors are not bothered by anything, there is a good chance that the problem is under or around your home. In that case, call in a sewerage company.
