What should I do if my neighbours are causing nuisance?

If your neighbours are causing a nuisance, such as noise pollution, try to make agreements together first. If that doesn’t help, you can report it to your landlord, municipality, homeowners’ association (vve) or supervisors.

Making agreements about noise pollution from neighbors

Neighbors must accept normal living sounds from each other. For example:

  • children playing;
  • coughing;
  • vacuum during the day;
  • slamming of doors.

Try to make agreements together first. For example, about what time your neighbors do chores or play music. About animals, such as barking dogs. Or about noises in the garden.

Help with nuisance from neighbors

In case of serious nuisance from neighbours, you can ask the landlord (for example the housing association) to take measures. For example, they can insulate walls or floors better. If you have a home within a building, for example an apartment, you can ask the homeowners’ association (vve) for help.

Does the nuisance persist? Then you can report it to:

  • the municipality;
  • the police;
  • a neighborhood mediator.
