Do you have a blockage in your shower drain? Here are a few ways to solve this.
Unclogging a shower drain with your hands
When the shower drain is clogged with hair and the blockage is not too deep, you can remove it with your hands. Open the shower drain and remove the hair
with your fingers or tweezers. If the blockage is deeper, you can use a wire. Do this by following the steps below:
- Take a piece of iron wire.
- Make a hook at the end of the wire.
- Gently push the piece of wire with the hook through the drain until you feel the blockage.
- Pull the thread upwards in a rotating motion. Hair and soap residues are caught by the hook.
- Keep an old towel, bucket or trash can handy to put the dirt from the drain in. Then wash your hands.
Unclogging a shower drain with a plunger
Another way to counteract the blockage is to use a plunger. When using a plunger, pressure is created on the blockage and it disappears into the drain. Place the rubber cap of the plunger on the drain and move the handle up and down. When you see the water start to flow again, you know if you have succeeded.
Please note that you should only use a plunger for minor blockages. If there is a major blockage, there is a chance that it will get stuck somewhere else in the drain. This in turn will cause bigger problems.
Unblocking with a drain snake
The idea of the drain snake is similar to the wire in solution 1. However, this one goes further into the drain. Unroll the drain snake and push it through the drain to puncture the blockage. Keep a towel handy to clean up the remains from the drain immediately.
Unclog shower drain with soda, cleaning vinegar and hot water
Unclog your clogged shower drain with a homemade drain cleaner. This product dissolves shampoo residue and hair, allowing the water to flow again. Here’s how to make your own drain cleaner:
Mix 50 grams of baking soda with 80 milliliters of cleaning vinegar in a bucket (Note: do this in the bathroom, because the mixture will start fizzing immediately).
Rinse the mixture down the drain.
Let it soak for an hour.
Then rinse the pipes with warm water.
An alternative is special unblocking agents that can be purchased at, for example, the hardware store. If none of the above steps work, call in an expert
