Looking for a property in de Pijp in Amsterdam?

While De Pijp is actually part of Stadsdeel Oud Zuid, it is still affectionately called de Pijp by locals. This neighbourhood lies south of the centre in between the Singelgracht, the Amstel, Amstelkanaal and the Boerenwetering. The main roadways are Ceintuurbaan, Stadhouderskade, Ferdinand Bolstraat, van Woustraat and the Amsteldijk. Construction of the underground Noord-Zuidlijn has been in progress since 2003, with a station to be built under the Ferdinand Bolstraat/Albert Cuypstraat and the Ceintuurbaan.

De Pijp was built in 1876 by primarily independent builders who wanted to quickly achieve profits, building up the space as quickly as possible (so-called ‘jerry-building’), as was the trend at that time.

No villas were constructed, but instead de Pijp became a district made up of long streets lined with 4-storey buildings with white roof eaves and a hoisting beam. Also, the width of every residence was 3 windows across. While initially there were no plans for a park or landscaping features in de Pijp, it would later be decided to create a park after all; what is the Sarphatipark today.

In the south of the district, multiple groups of residences were built based on the Amsterdam School architectural style and show resemblances with the construction of the Oud Zuid part of Amsterdam. The Diamantstraat, on the other hand, is characterised by elements of the Renaissance Revival style, to give an example.

Most of the streets in de Pijp are named after painters, with the exception of the streets in the Diamantbuurt named after precious stones. The former Heineken Brewery, the Royal Asscher Diamond Company, the popular Albert Cuyp market and the Sarphatipark attract throngs of tourists from all over. You can also of course take in some culture in the Ostade theatre and the Rialto movie/film theatre. Amongst the Dutch and expats alike, this is a very popular area to live, work and to go out to restaurants and bars.
